Construction diary:

November 2005

11/23

Framers have installed our first floor.  Walked down our stairs for the first time.  The house that we designed is really beginning to take shape.  Every time I go out to the site, I am so overwhelmed by what we are doing.  I only get to go out on the weekends cuz I've been so busy at work and it's dark when I go home so I get to see the progress in leaps and bounds.  I hear we have some walls.  We're gonna go visit the site on Thanksgiving.  We think the entire first floor has walls.  It'll be a surprise for both of us as Mark wasn't there for the last day and a half.

The construction driveway was put in today.  It's a long, long story.  Please see the pictures.....  The 11/10 pictures!
The framers have continued to work today, more drainage has been put in, and the rockery on the kid's room/sewing room side of the house has been installed.

Went to the site today.  We have lumber!!!  Most of the basement has been framed in, the main floor will be next.
Mark has been working hard at the site for the last few weeks, I've been focused on finishing up my training class, so haven't posted lately.  I actually hadn't been out to the site for over a week.
The latest wrinkle is that our foundation isn't square.  The framers ran the baseplate (pressure-treated wood that is bolted to the foundation) down one side and then did the 90 degree angle and ran it down the perpendicular side.  By the time it got to the end of the wall, the baseplate was 4" off the top of the foundation.  So, they had to make a slight adjustment all the way around.  The good news is that the concrete guy is taking responsibility for the mistake, he paid for the extra work that the framers had to do to address the problem.  I've posted pictures that show the issues.  It'll be OK, the structural engineer signed off on it, and he's a bit of a stickler.  Which is good.  There won't be any long-term issues; houses have been standing for years that have much less engineering.
The whole process is becoming very, very real.  We have concrete and lumber, we can see the view out our windows, we can see how the parts are fitting together.
Mark has spent several days trying to get a generator for the site.  He borrowed one, he looked at renting one, and finally bought a refurbished one.  His truck stinks of gasoline.
Good news:  No more mischief at the site lately!
