Construction diary:

January 2004

1-31-04

AJ & Russ come up on Jean's birthday, we take them out to see the land.

1-28-04

Mark meets with a civil engineer at the site, also meets with Tony at the site with the plans.  Drives out to pick up house design from Carol in Enumclaw, no, Clear water.

1-27-04

We meet with Ron Healey again and get the preliminary house drawings.  We like most of it.  Jean shows it off to Mom & Dad and Carlee & Cody happen to be there.  Feedback from Cody on watching for mechanical issues, chaseways.  Has had a bad experience with Ron's design.  Mark and Jean talk late about changes to the plans, biggest issues; stairway, Jean's desk, view of the TV, and vaulted or not vaulted ceiling on the lower floor.

1-26-04

Meet with Jaime at Starbucks in Renton.  Things look good, but we once again realize how crunched we are for time.

1-19-04

We meet with Ron Healey and he's going to work on the design for us.  We discussed the tightness of the lot, and what we're willing to adjust in the house.

Jean gets mortgage app from Jamie.

1-18-04

Mark & I buy rubber boots and go out traipsing across the land.  We made it all the way down the Right of way easement, figured out the upper land line a little better, climbed up the west ravine, found the stream.  Discovered the north ravine is a cliff, not just a ravine.  Found several land markers.  Got really, really muddy.

We are 60 days out from close.

1-15-04

Jean calls Jamie from Windermere mortgage at Jeff's suggestion, gets better rate quotes.

1-13-04 (?)

Jean gets a Good Faith Estimate from the lender, it's way high.  She shops around.

1-12-04

Mark meets with Ron Healey and Terry from Terry Home Designs.  Both out at the site.  Mark thinks that Ron is the better bet with an estimate of approx. 5K.

1-11-04 Sunday

We drove out to Greenwater (past Enumclaw) to meet with Carol McDonald, a building designer.  She quotes us $400 to do a design plan, $2K to do the plans.  OK, she's way out there, but at a much more reasonable price.  She isn't an architect, but she tells us we don't need one, but that we may have to get the plans approved by an engineer.  We want to ask the permit office about this.

1-9-04 Friday

We met with The Johnson Partnership.  They quoted us $30K to do our plans, and CPSQFT of $180-$220.  We walked away with sticker shock.

1-7-04

Mark met with the architects at The Johnson Partnership.  In the paperwork we receive from the sellers, we see they'd hired them to design their house.  The architects remember the site well and provide us with a copy of the soils report.  They are putting together a proposal and we'll meet with them on Friday.

1-8-04

Mark gets on an offer on his house in Penticton.  We're selling it and using the proceeds for the house project.

1-3-04

We go to the remodel show.  Find the wide-plank flooring we want to use.  Get referrals to 3 architects.  See the roof material and the siding we want to use.

1-2-04

The appraisal on the site is done.
